I've been watching this show Beach Patrol: Honolulu today because it's raining outside & there's a marathon on. I was in Honolulu a 2 years ago so I'm recognizing all the places they're doing rescues- waikiki beach, hanauma bay, sandy beach, rabbit island, etc. While watching a certain episode I had a flashback to my only serious near death experience.
I was at Edisto Beach with some girls on a church trip & we were swimming & laying out. At Edisto there are a lot of jetties. It's pretty much just large rocks that are piled up together that go way out into the ocean. Those have always scared me- huge, sharp, sketchy creatures all up in there, etc. Yikes. Everytime I'd get near the rocks I'd freak out & swim like a maniac the other way. Well, I was swimming with my friend Reames & the wind was really picking up. I'm talking we saw an umbrella ella ella a a a get pulled up out of the sand and fly down the beach. The current was completely insane- so much so that we got to the point that we couldn't stand up anymore.
We started swimming as hard as we could against the current- dumb, & got so tired that we couldn't use our arms anymore. We finally got to the point where all we could do was float. We were praying out loud to each other & getting closer & closer to the rocks & out to sea. Finally we hit the rocks, literally got thrashed into them & all cut up. Somehow we got over the jetty & just floated for awhile until we had enough strength to backstroke back to shore. It took forever, but we both finally made it. When we got on the sand, we were bloody as heck from the rocks, but so happy to be out of the water. SCARY. It was stupid of us to be in the water with conditions like that, so the whole thing was our fault. I won't push the limits with the ocean anymore. Trust me.
What about you? Have you ever had a near death experience? I don't think many people actually read this blog, but if you do & you've had one, share it as a comment. Interesting stuff.

I have actually had a few near death experiences. Growing up my family was on vacation and the brakes gave out in our car as we were driving around the steep curvy mountainous roads. I was so young I can't remember exactly how we ended up stopping, but we did.
Another time I was swimming in the deep end of our neighborhood pool and a kid jumped off the diving board directly on top of me. All the air was pushed out of my lungs & I was trapped at the bottom of the deep end. After a few LONG seconds someone saw me down there & dove down to rescue me.
Finally, I was climbing some rocky walls with a friend of mine just messing around. We weren't wearing any kind of equipment or anything. When I reached up & grabbed the next rock to pull myself up, it slowly started coming out of the wall. I felt myself falling backwards and all of a sudden it felt like a hand pushed me back up. I know it was my guardian angel.
